My sense is that as white people our unfolding stories (and the learning that accompanies them) are the only authentic path into the work of anti-racism. I know that owning my racism is only the first line of the story but it is an important entry point. Then the work starts and it is lifelong. Thanks for journeying with me Rama.

In reply to <a href="https://www.justinfoxton.com/2020/07/29/becoming-an-anti-racist/#comment-572">Thomas Holtz</a>.

Hello Thomas. And welcome to the club. I salute the work you are doing personally and in your community including the very large ecosystem of Multotec. You do show up openly and authentically in doing this work - and I am conscious of your personal concern that we - as white people - do our work rather than expecting black people to help us. The question i am sitting with is how I can show up differently as a white person - less white if you like - in ways that turn the tide on the negative impact of my racism on black people. That is a mirror that I need to hold up daily.
Thank you Thomas for the gift of working together (personally and professionally) to bring about shift in this area.

Hello my name is Thomas and I would like to join this esteemed club of recovering racists. I say this uncynically and without any malice.
Racism is a bias that is so deeply rooted an unconscious that it takes a lot of personal work to see it and start the journey of reprogramming one's mental model. At it's core this is a belief that black people are inferior to white people and it validates a belief that only white people can guide and rescue the black "soul". It has become so deeply rooted that for many black people this is valid for them too. Nelson Mandela has show us otherwise!
It is my belief that we can only liberate ourselves from any form of self-limiting beliefs, whether they are a sense of superiority or inferiority. The role I can play is to show up authentically and try and unbiasedly see the authentic soul in others. This is a life long journey.
Thank you Justin for the gift you have given me and I will endeavor to stay open and authentic in whatever I do.

We come back to this notion of power over, be it overt or implied and how we consciously engage with that reality. Nature is full of examples on how to behave in a hierarchical structure. This is usually overt power and fought for aggressively and often payed for with death. Here we have a situation that is implied or unconscious and not earned but inherited because of genetics. How do we help those that deny it's existence, typically the beneficiaries, to recognize this privilege with humility and gratitude. This era of competing for everything and aspiring to have absolute power does not belong in our modern world.
I believe at the core of this privileged thinking is a belief that to be worthy as a person or a people you need to be "better" than someone else, or your "tribe" needs to be better than the next one. In an ecosystem we need to see the other as an asset to us and our humanity without the need to impose a sense of judgement.
