I agree fully with what you are saying and that nicknames are a wonderful part of growing up and being accepted and affirmed. I had several too – all very good humoured and not insulting in the least! My experiences of “body-shaming” have always come more from close family members.The result in siblings (esp girls) has been in some cases catastrophic. The message is that men AND women care about this stuff and that there is loads of place for fun but no place for shaming – especially kids/teens.

I’m told that at close to 70 I’m ‘looking well’ whatever that means. My experience us that just about every teenager gets a nickname from his contemporaries based on his physical appearance and demeanor – ‘bushman, carrot, wedgie, flash, goens’ were some of mine. I did not for one minute consider this to be body shaming, just adolescent jibing, I never gave it a second thought and rather like when I meet an old contemporary after many years to be greeted ‘howzit bushman’
