In reply to Nicole. I am proposing that adoption needs to be rethought; overhauled if you like. I am not suggesting people stop adopting or that adoption be scrapped. I am saying we need to apply deeper thought to how we are practising adoption. Hence my invitation to people to join a conversation...

I’ve read this twice, but I can’t figure out what solution you are proposing? Are you saying that white middle or upper class families should not be adopting black kids in South Africa? What do you propose should happen to these kids then? The only alternative seems to be for them to grow up in an institution and these can be bad enough but what really scares me is the thought of what happens to the 18yos being dumped on the street with literally no support.

I completely agree. My gut response is, No way, these amendments will make things worse for vulnerable children!
But a couple of weeks ago, I was reading through the comments on the DSD FB page. Comment after comment in support of the amendments. Mostly from the Black community. And their comments made sense.
And if we’re honest, many many vulnerable children (I’m talking children currently at risk, in abusive homes, in institutional care, not babies placed for adoption), are not really benefiting from private adoption services. Adoption, and child protection, foster care, support of children at risk within their communities etc needs a radical overall

Very valid points for discussions. DSD should work with all parties to determine workable solutions and requirements for cross cultural adoptions instead of passing negative laws with negative impact all round.
